Apple’s 2026 smartwatch lineup could include Touch ID, according to code leaks — marking the first major biometric upgrade for the wearable.

With the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Series 11 expected to launch in the coming weeks, attention is already shifting to what’s next. References discovered in Apple’s internal systems — flagged by Macworld — suggest that upcoming 2026 Apple Watch models may feature Touch ID, Apple’s long-running fingerprint authentication technology.

Touch ID spotted in internal code 🔍

The findings mention “AppleMesa,” Apple’s codename historically tied to Touch ID. Notably, no such references appear for current or imminent models, indicating that biometric authentication is still in the prototype stage.

If introduced, Touch ID would allow users to unlock their watch and approve transactions with a fingerprint, offering an alternative to passcodes or the current double-press side button method. While some question the utility of fingerprint sensors on such a small device, it could simplify quick interactions — especially when wearing gloves or in wet conditions.

Sensor upgrades expected in 2026

A separate report from Digitimes claims that the sensor count in the 2026 Apple Watch will double, primarily for health-tracking functions. Touch ID hardware could account for part of this component increase, although Apple has not confirmed any plans.

Apple leaks hint at broader device roadmap 🚀

Beyond the watch, Apple appears to have accidentally revealed details of upcoming products for 2025 and 2026. As MacRumors highlighted, identifiers found in Apple’s public software code reference next-generation chips for the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Vision Pro, signaling advancements in silicon, display technology, and connectivity. A refreshed Apple TV with enhanced AI and gaming capabilities is also expected.

Apple traditionally embeds device strings and codenames in its software well ahead of public announcements. While final specifications remain unconfirmed, these leaks offer a rare glimpse into the company’s multi-year roadmap.

Bottom line: Apple has yet to comment officially, but internal code strongly indicates that Touch ID is under active consideration for its 2026 smartwatch lineup.
